It is with much love that we celebrate the life of Leland Thurman also known as Cat Daddy and Daddy Rich, who left us on May 4, 2026, just shy of his 101st birthday. Leland passed away peacefully, after courageously battling a lengthy illness. Born on May 15, 1925 in Hodgenville, Kentucky, Leland was a beacon of kindness, strength, and love to all who knew him. His sunny personality and sense of humor was always a bright spot to anyone’s day.
Leland was the cherished son of the late Mayme L. Thurman and William M. Hawker. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Oliver “Pud” Thurman, his son, Harold “Dino” Thurman, and his beloved daughters, JoAnn Thomas and Saundra Woodard and his Goddaughter, Pam Handley.
On September 5, 2008, Leland married the love of his life and his best friend, Tracy. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Leland’s family was his pride and joy; he is survived by his devoted wife Tracy, his son, Leland E. “Eugene” Thurman, his son, Tim Warren, his daughter, Debbie Thomas and his cherished godchildren, Ron Cox and Olivia Cox-Mitchell. He was the proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren and an adoring great-grandfather to 31 great-grandchildren.
A proud patriot, Leland honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. His time in service was marked by dedication and friendship, values he carried throughout his life.
Leland was an avid hunter and fisherman and a devoted fan of the University of Louisville Cardinals. Beyond his personal passions, Leland was a steadfast pillar in his community. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior as a young man and was an active member of the Lane Lincoln CME Church until his health no longer permitted him to attend. His kindness extended far beyond his family; he was a treasured friend to many, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met. His memory will be cherished by a wide circle of family, friends, and a community who loved him dearly, including numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service to celebrate Leland's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at First Baptist Church, 404 S. Lincoln Blvd. Hodgenville, Bro. Kenny Carter officiating. Burial with Navy military honors will follow in Hubbard Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Rest in peace, dear Leland; your legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know you.
