Howard Lee Skaggs

Howard Lee Skaggs, age 95, of Upton, was born on March 15, 1923 in Hammonsville and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Sunrise Manor in Hodgenville.

He was a member of Three Forks Bacon Creek Baptist Church in Hammonsville where he served as deacon and song leader for many years; a proud Army veteran of WWII serving in the 1st Infantry, 634th Tank Destroyer Battalion, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest; retired bus driver for LaRue County School System, farmer and self-employed carpenter and furniture maker.

Howard was preceded in death by a son, James Skaggs; his parents, Leighlan T. and Mary Druen Skaggs; a son-in-law, Clarence “Junior” Warren; two sisters, Doris Bailey and Naomi Bailey and a brother, William “Buzzy” Skaggs.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Elizabeth Lucille Bailey Skaggs; three daughters, Imogene Warren of Magnolia, Eloise Phillips of Horse Cave and Mellony Skaggs of Hodgenville; a son, Gerald (Patty) Skaggs of Savannah, Tennessee; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Skaggs of Upton; a sister, Faydell Nunn of Magnolia; a brother, Tom (Hazel) Skaggs of Magnolia; 11 grandchildren, Brian Warren, Dan (Jennette) Skaggs, Steven (Tana) Skaggs, Shel Warren, Monisa (Bill) Philbeck, Beverly (Todd) Lewis, Chris (Belinda) Phillips, Wendell (Mitzi) Skaggs, Laura Beth Phillips, Wesley (Nicole) Warren and Andrew (Leigh Ann) Skaggs; 21 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM (ET), Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Three Forks Bacon Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Talley and Rev. Gordon McDowell officiating.  Burial with full military honors will follow in the Hammonsville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM (ET), Tuesday and after 10 AM (ET), Wednesday at Dixon-Rogers Funeral Home in Magnolia.
